Bloodfed Anopheles maculipennis s.l. females were collected resting in and around sheepfolds in the northwestern prefecture of Florina, Greece. The specimens were identified as An. maculipennis and An. messeae on the basis of similarity to published DNA sequence data for the rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) region. Novel DNA sequences were obtained for the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COl) for both species. Correlations of COl and ITS2 sequences were used to identitfy specimens, with respect to ITS2 sequences in Genbank. These results constitute new distribution records for these two species in northwestern Greece.

The parasitic development is initiated in the larval host, continues in the pupa and is completed in the abdominal haemocoel of the adult, the mean body length of the parasite increasing from about 1mm to 12-13 mm. From 1 to 5 mermithid worms were found per adult host. Up to 87% of male and female mosquitoes hatched in the laboratory or swept in the herbaceous layer surrounding woodland pools were parasitized. The prevalence of the parasite varied between pools.
