The larvae of several species of water mites are ectoparasites on adult mosquitoes, the majority of the mites recorded belonging to the genera Thyas (Thyasidae) and Arrenurus (Arrenuridae). Mullen (1975) presented 238 world-wide records of acarine parasites of mosquitoes but more than half of the observations concerned unidentified or doubtfully identified mites. In Europe parasitism of mosquitoes by water mites is mainly recorded from England and Germany (Mullen, 1975). From Denmark only Thyasides dentata (Thor) (on Aedes flavescens
(Müller) and Arrenurus globator (Müller) (on Anopheles maculipennis Meigen) have been recorded (Lundblad, 1927). However, Danish woodland mosquitoes are frequently parasitized by water mites. In this paper aspects of the parasitic association are analysed.

There are few major works on French mosquitoes. Those that exist are species catalogues (seguy, 1925a; Hedeen, 1958, 1959; Callot & Rioux, 1965), sometimes including distribution and bibliography (Rageau et al., 1970; Moussiegt, 1986). A certain number of species listed in the literature cannot be considered as truly belonging to the French fauna. Furthermore, duing the last few years, new species have been described, and taxonomic changes have occurred (synonyms, new sub-genera, etc.). The purpose of this paper is to update the list of species collected in France and Corsica.

In the British Isles five species of Anopheles have been recorded, all grouped within the subgenus Anopheles. They are An. atroparvus van Thiel, An. algeriensis Theobald, An. messeae Falleroni, An. claviger (Meigen) and An. plumbeus Stephens. Although Edwards (1936) suspected the existence of An. maculipennis s.s., its presence in the British Isles has never been established. Renewed interest in the distribution of Anopheles mosquitoes and their ability to transmit malaria has arisen in recent years owing to the potential effects of global warming on insects and insect-borne pathogens in Europe.

The software MOS-KEY-TOS® is a computer-based expert system developed with the aim of providing the Italian National Health Agencies, involved in public environmental prevention and hygiene, with a tool for the identification of Italian mosquitoes. MOS-KEY-TOS is a set of data and graphics files written in the DELTA (DEscription Language for TAxonomy) format for use with the program INTKEY, an interactive program for identifying a specimen by comparing its attributes with stored descriptions of taxa.

MOS-KEY-TOS® is useful for beginners for quick and correct identification and it familiarises the user with all of the required morphological characters. It has proven to be an excellent training tool for entomologists and public health workers. The knowledge base can be expanded and refined, and an extension to include all of the mosquitoes of Europe is already planned.
