This article is the sixth in a series to be published in the Bulletin to add meaning to the names of European mosquitoes. For each entry the name of the taxon is given together with the author and date and the reference to the original description. There is also either a quotation from the original description, translated where necessaIy, or a resume indicating the author's reason for using the name in question. Where appropriate, a brief explanation of the etymology is provided. In some cases the reason for naming the species may not be clear and correspondence to the author is invited. Additional information will be published in future issues of the Bulletin as letters to the editors.

A revised list of the mosquito species occurring in Spain is presented. Fifty-nine species are recorded by the authors or noted in the literature. However, due to lack of voucher specimens and the unreliability of several older reports, only 53 species records are considered valid. All special cases are discussed.

Culex torrentium is reported from Spain for the first time in the summer of 1999 from the region of Cerdanya, province of Girona. Cx. torrentium was associated with Anopheles petragnani, Culiseta longiareolata, Cs. annulata, Culex impudicus, Cx. hortensis and/or Cx. pipiens. Although different taxonomic characters for larvae and females have been tentatively used to separate Cx. torrentium from Cx. pipiens, only male genitalia can be used as a reliable diagnostic character.

The checklist presented here is the first ever made of the mosquitoes of Latvia A total of 25 species have been identified as occurring in the country but further investigations are necessary, especially as very few distributional data are, as yet, available.

A new subgenus Fredwardsius of genus Aedes, is described and compared with other subgenera. Distinctive features of the female, male, female and male genitalia, pupa, and fourth-instar larva of the sub genus are listed. The subgenus has a distribution in southern Europe, southern Asia, and Africa.
